Magnetic Application Example

Modelling of the proximity-effect
A major difficulty in designing high-frequency inductors is to properly account for the influence of eddy current effects in windings. These phenomena include skin- and proximity-effect losses.
Skin-effect losses can be taken into account by a simple 'back-of-the-envelop' calculation. However, proximity-effect losses are much more difficult to compute. This is because the reel and wire geometries, as well as the wire layout, have a large impact on the proximity-effect losses.
It is therefore necessary to apply numerical methods that incorporate geometrical details into the solution scheme.
